Well, as far as you already understand, Blackjack is a card game. Today this game is played in almost all countries all over the world, including the USA, Canada and Europe. No one can object to the fact this is more than enough for a card game to be popular and even classic already. Have any of you ever thought about blackjack itself and why this game has such an interesting name?
Speaking about blackjack, the card which gave the name to this game should be noticed: it was a Jack of Spades. If a player had this Jack together with an Ace of Spades at once after he was dealt cards then this person got some additional money. So, a Jack of Spades was considered to be the main card of the game.
An interesting fact: the name “blackjack” is used in Britain for the completely different game which is played as the game called “crazy eights”.
Now blackjack is a very popular card game in the world. America had found out about blackjack in the 19th century and made it to be the favorite game of millions. Today all fans of blackjack know such names as Roger Baldwin, Edward O. Thorp, Ken Uston and others. These people are considered to be the ones who changed the history of blackjack. They are inventors of new ways to play it.
So, thanks to a Jack of Spades, who is not only Jack but also black, we have such an interesting name for the worldwide card game. This Jack plus an Ace gave 21 as a sum. That is why this game was also well-known as Twenty One or Vingt-et-Un (twenty one in French).
Now we know who is Black Jack and the game is called after him.
